I have just discovered this fascinating world and want to learn more. Where can I go to learn how to do this safely. There does not appear to be any classes locally, and I don't feel this is a trial and error skill to learn. So.....how does a wanna-be, become a be?
Hello Dave,
I recommend going to these rec tree climbing web sites, both have discussion forums where experienced climbers can give you advice along the way. I post on these sites as "moss". You'll also find useful tips and info: TCI forum TCC forum TCC front page, useful articles, info etc.
Also take a look at the New Tribe web site, they have excellent gear for rec climbers, made in the USA. Their web site is loaded with quality info, books video etc.
I climb frequently and try to mentor as many new rec climbers as I can but my capacity is limited. I started out 4 years ago on the web sites above, got myself climbing and then traveled to Atlanta to take a BTCC (Basic Tree Climbing Course) with Peter Jenkins. Later I went to Georgia again to take a facilitator course (learned to run group climbs) with Genevieve Summers (Dancing with Trees). Feel free to contact me to discuss further: andrew@natureclimber.com

Dave,
The dvd "Tree Climbing Basics" from Tree Climbing International I think is great. Also a small book "Tree Climber's Companion". If you need more email praguema@netscape.net
